Matthew Flinders and George Bass set out from Port Jackson on 7 October 1798 in the sloop 'Norfolk', accompanied by the private vessel 'Nautilus' (Captain Bishop, Supercargo Roger Simpson), to circumnavigate Van Diemens Land. They reached Twofold Bay on 9 October, and spent four days surveying the bay. Flinders was a captain in the navy, hydrographer and discoverer. On 24 Jan. 1801 he was given command of HM Sloop Investigator, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander, for the purpose of surveying the coast of Australia.
